At Brown Lawyers, we provide both legal and non-legal services. The key value you bring to the team will be to supervise, deliver and hone the legal services provided by Brown Lawyers. As our primary legal technician, you will be responsible for a team who will work with you to ensure that the legal services provided by Brown Lawyers are of an excellent quality, are delivered on time, and consistent with Brown Lawyers’ preventive and human-centered approach. You will be guided by our developing project management system. This role will require you to work together with non-legal service providers on our team to identify opportunities to use the law and legal tools to achieve client objectives. You will be responsible to stay on top of legal developments and trends that are of importance to our community and to apply your learning and experience to the continuous improvement of the technical aspects of legal service delivery. You will be our legal services team leader.
Frequently Asked Questions
You will be paid an annual starting salary of $100,000. Compensation will include access to our co-pay extended health benefits plan, an annual CPD budget, payment of LawPro and LSO dues and payment of Hamilton Law Association membership. Compensation includes 4 weeks of vacation and 6 sick days per year.
There is no “billable hour” target because Brown Lawyers does not operate on a billable hour model. You will be expected to work an average of 40 hours per week. Regular office hours are Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You will be available for evening appointments (approx. 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ) two evenings per month.
During your time at work, you will devote 80% of your time to client work, 10% to service improvement, and 10% to learning and knowledge building.
You will conduct an average of 25 client meetings (including scheduled phone calls, video conferences, and in-person meetings) per week.
You will be responsible for the delivery of legal services in the areas of estate planning and small business/corporate. This will involve some real estate aspects as well when they arise in the larger context of estate planning and corporate services. You will provide legal advice in these areas, create legal tools that support clients’ plans, and oversee legal transactions and processes.
Primarily, you will work from the office during regular office hours so that you can be available to support the team and to meet with clients. There may be opportunities to work from home when working on service improvement projects and participating in learning and knowledge-building opportunities.
You will not have a dedicated assistant. You will work as part of a team of professionals who will support you to achieve the best possible outcomes for our clients and our community.
