Embrace impermanence
Nothing lasts forever
Of course, we know this
Everyone knows this
Summer is fleeting
Leaves Fall, snow melts
Spring rains and flowers arrive
We, and everyone we know, die.
We know this, but we don’t live it.
We expect tomorrow to be just like today
Our relationships, our bodies, our money, our minds and our win streaks
We expect permanence and for that, we suffer.
“We both thought that I would die first.”
“I’m too young to get sick or die.”
“I never thought we’d be in this position.”
“We aren’t one of those families.”
“Everyone knows what I want.”
“The kids will be able to figure it out.”
“I’ll get around to it.”
“The business runs itself”
“I’ll figure it out when I need to”
All lies we tell ourselves because we seek permeance.
We are trained to take life for granted. To avoid the reality that we just don’t know.
Only the wise know they know nothing.
We all can be wise.
Embrace the unknown.
Cultivate the opaque.
Accept that you’ll never know anything except that it will be over for you one day
Understand that your children and your friends want to help you and take advantage of you
Things change.
Humans are flawed.
Plan accordingly.
Planning is a habit
Communicating is a practice
Knowing yourself and what matters takes time and work
Accept that you’re not very good at it.
Yet.
Accept that you don’t have much time.
Truth.
Try.
Because you love.
Because you care.
Because you have something that you do want to last.
Because you don’t want to be a burden, even though you will be.
Because it’s ok that you want your life to mean something to someone.
Embrace impermanence.
Plan for change.
Be caring and wise.
Know your story so far.
And learn how to tell it to all of us.
